How
Prostate Cancer Spreads & Testosterone Replacement After
Treatment
April 7, 2008
At various times during the history of the Prostate Forum, Dr.
Myers has discussed the process by which prostate cancer spreads
out of the prostate and the implications this process has for
treatment. During the past few years, a number of different research
threads have gradually converged to clarify this problem, which
has had profound implications for treatment.
The world’s prostate cancer literature has developed gradually,
but Dr. Snuffy Myers can easily point to one paper that drew
all of these diverse threads together for him. Swanson, et al.
recently (2007) reported the results of Southwest Oncology Group
(SWOG) 8794. This trial compared the effectiveness of surgery
alone versus surgery plus adjuvant radiation therapy for patients
with locally advanced disease. This study’s findings have
a profound impact on our understanding of how prostate cancer
spreads and how this cancer should be approached.
In this issue of Prostate Forum you’ll also find a discussion
of the pros and cons of testosterone replacement after treatment.
