Created in 1996 as a tool
to educate patients attending his second opinion clinic, the
Prostate Forum took on a greater
significance for Dr. Myers in February 1999 when he himself
was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had metastasized
to the lymph nodes. Over the years, Dr. Myers has written
extensively about why he chose to have his pelvic lymph nodes
removed along with external beam radiation, brachytherapy, and
hormonal therapy. Since then he has continued to chronicle his
struggles with the debilitating side effects that forced him
to take medical leave for a time; his recovery process; the dramatic
diet and lifestyle changes he’s adopted and recommends
to patients at his clinic; and the steps he’s taken to
prevent his cancer from recurring.
Now with an undetectable PSA,
Dr Myers hopes to use his own experiences to improve the lives
of men worldwide.
Despite the fear and anxiety Dr. Myers felt at his diagnosis
in 1999, he now feels lucky—lucky that he had a 30 year
well of experience to draw from; lucky he knew not just the
leading doctors at the various treatment centers but the true “artists” in
the field, and lucky that he had the resiliency and hope to
create a treatment strategy that would prolong his survival
and improve his quality of life. Today, Dr. Myers’s PSA
is undetectable and his ordeal led him to adopt diet and lifestyle
changes that will not only keep his prostate cancer at bay
but also improve the cardiovascular, metabolic, and other “age-related” health
issues facing our country as a whole.
By sharing his personal and clinical experiences with readers
of Prostate Forum, Dr. Myers hopes to offer patients hope by
presenting the most promising clinical studies and to give
them insight into aspects of their own disease.
The Prostate Forum focuses on every aspect of prostate cancer
from initial diagnosis to preventing slow growing prostate
cancer from progressing to treating extensive metastatic disease.
Underlying every page of every issue, however, is the understanding
and compassion of an oncologist who has undergone the very
treatments he recommends for his patients every day. |
