Partin Coefficient Tables:
Prediction of Probability of Established Capsular Penetration

Last Revised May 14, 1997

Introduction | Example

PSA = 0.0-4.0 ng/ml | PSA = 4.1-10.0 ng/ml | PSA = 10.1-20.0 ng/ml | PSA = 20.1 ng/ml or more

Introduction

These four tables give data which allow you or you doctor to predict the probability that you have established capsular penetration on the basis of your Gleason score, your PSA value, and your clinical stage. In other words, these tables allow you to tell whether the prostate cancer has penetrated into and perhaps through the "walls" or capsule of the prostate. Be careful to use the table which is based on your PSA value.

Note that the data given in these four tables are roughly the reverse of the data in the tables predicting the probability of a patient having organ-confined disease.

Example

Harry is a 67-year-old man with a PSA of 9.8 ng/ml and a Gleason score of 2 + 3 = 5. His doctor has categorized his clinical stage as T1c since his cancer was found solely as a result of an elevated PSA value.

Using the table for PSA values between 4.1 and 10.0 ng/ml, we find that Harry has a 27% likelihood of established capsular penetration. In other words, there are about 27 chances in 100 that the prostate cancer has penetrated into Harry's prostate capsule.

Prediction of Established Capsular Penetration
PSA = 0.0-4.0 ng/ml
Gleason score Stage T1a Stage T1b Stage T1c Stage T2a Stage T2b Stage T2c Stage T3a
2-4 9 19 10 18 25 21 ...
5 17 32 18 30 40 34 51
6 19 35 21 34 43 37 53
7 ... 44 31 45 51 45 52
8-10 ... 43 34 47 48 42 ...

All numbers represent percent predictive probabilities (95% confidence interval); ellipses indicate lack of sufficient data to calculate probability.
