Number 5 – Effects of Medications for Other
Diseases, I
Among men with prostate cancer less than half of them actually die of the cancer:
a good 25% die of heart disease. In fact, heart disease, high blood pressure,
diabetes, stroke, and other cancers together kill more men than prostate cancer.
Dr. Myers discusses the fact that many prostate cancer patients are therefore
undergoing treatment for other, more lethal diseases at the same time that they
are being treated for their cancers. In this issue, he examines common drugs
used to treat atherosclerosis, heart failure, and high blood pressure, which
might have a favorable impact on the management of prostate cancer or reverse
side effects of its treatment. |
